School with Questionable "Family Values"

Families with children at the Interdistrict Downtown School in Minneapolis are learning firsthand how homosexual activism in public schools seeks to undermine parental authority. The Star Tribune reports that as a part of the "Families All Matter" diversity curriculum at the school, second-grade teacher Peter Sage read to his class Asha's Mums, a book about a girl with two moms. Gena Bounds, whose 7-year-old daughter Darriell was in the class, said Sage "told [the class] that he's gay and that he and his partner are adopting a child, and the child will have two dads. Now Darriell thinks the school is telling her she needs to believe that two daddies or two mommies is the same thing as a mom and a dad." The teacher also implied to the children that those who do not share his views on the family were bigots just like Sage's racist grandfather. When parents complained to the principal, they were told that their children could not be reassigned, and should consider enrolling their kids in a private school. Unfortunately, this case in Minnesota shows the all-too-common tactic used by homosexual activists to go around parents by indoctrinating children through the public schools.

Court Says Cities Can Regulate Sex Clubs

If there's one thing that can cause urban blight, it's the proliferation of strip clubs and other sexually oriented businesses. Although free speech considerations have prevented local communities from being able to ban such businesses outright, a growing line of cases has established the right of communities to strictly regulate such clubs. Yesterday, the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals added to that list of cases, ruling against a group of "adult" businesses that had challenged an ordinance in the city of Gary, Indiana. The court upheld precedents indicating that such businesses can be regulated as to their "time, place, and manner" of operation, as well as (in the words of the ordinance) to "protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizenry" against the well-documented harmful effects such establishments have upon surrounding businesses and residential areas. The law in Gary requires such clubs to close at 11:00 p.m., prohibits physical contact between customers and semi-nude "dancers," requires booths to be open, and forbids sexual activity on the premises. Kudos to our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund for successfully defending such laws around the country.

Protecting the Pulpit

Recently on the website WorldNetDaily there was a piece on pastors and the right to free speech by our own William L Saunders and Gary McCaleb of the Alliance Defense Fund. In it they describe how various media outlets, along with their allies in liberal advocacy groups, try to silence political speech in churches. Saunders and McCaleb--both lawyers--explain that pastors have every right to preach on the sort of values issues we care about, like life and family, and that threats to them about losing their IRS tax exemptions are nothing but bullying tactics. Liberal activists try to keep pastors "neutral" as a ploy to keep them quiet and undermine their religious liberty, a tactic Saunders and McCaleb both expose and answer. The underlying message is an important one for us to keep in mind, given the continuous assaults on the religious liberty of Christians launched by homosexual activists and their liberal allies. To combat that on a larger scale, the Family Research Council is holding its first Liberty Sunday simulcast from Boston this Sunday, October 15th. I hope you will join us for this landmark event, which will be broadcast around the country, and help us to preserve our First Freedom.
